After I got home from Yakima, Richard told me I had missed the excitement Saturday night. An ATV came tearing down the beach and then went roaring up the road. Presumeably from B___ Park, but possibly from the nearby State Park. Aside from the fact that it is against the campground rules, it is dangerous to have an ATV tearing through where there are little kids playing. Not to mention that legally speaking, it is tresspassing for someone who is not a registered camper here to be in the campground.
I got home Sunday in plenty of time to work the gate. We had a large group taking 15 campsites come in Sunday for the week. Anytime you have a large group of people mixed with alcohol, things can get out of hand. The organizer of the group talked to us and promised good behavior from his group. I made several runs through the campground during the evening, and everything was calm. Then, a little after 10 an ATV with 2 riders came scooting down the beach and through the parking lot. Richard stopped them and told them the sheriff would be called. Then, the ATV took off up the road. Rick heard the ATV and ran out of his camper, jumped in his truck and took off after them. He forgot that he had his little trash collecting trailer hooked behind the pickup. It looked like something in a cartoon, with the pickup scattering dust and gravel everywhere, and the little trailer bouncing and skidding and hopping along behind the truck. Rick came back a few minutes later without having caught them.
After calming down a little, Rick and Richard went out on a search and identify mission in the pickup — without the trailer. They spotted the ATV on the beach and it turns out it was one of our campers from the large group. The organizer of the outing said he had the keys to the ATV and no one else would be riding it. By the time all that was settled, it was 11 pm, time to lock up. As we were about to go into our campers, we looked out at the marina and spotted a half dozen guys fishing off the boat docks. Rick called down to them, “Tell me you aren’t fishing off my docks!?!?!!” Then he went down and told them, up close and personally, that the marina was closed from 10 pm to 5 am, and that fishing from the docks was not allowed at anytime, and that the marina docks were only for use by registers patrons. The guys got in their illegally docked boat and left.
What a night.
