Things have been very quiet here the past few weeks. And we’re not complaining! The campers have all been playing in the lake and just relaxing. They keep us busy, checking people in and selling firewood and ice in the evenings. But it is noticably quieter than last year. Rick and Julie have done a good job of weeding out the troublemakers.
The deer often wander through in the evenings. One brought her fawn with her the night before last. And the Great Horned Owl comes in every evening between 9:30 and 10:00. One night I said, “It’s about time for the owl,” and he flew in and landed on one of the trees as if on cue! Another night, I was sitting by the gate house reading and felt a sudden rushing of a breeze and it was the owl flying in only three feet off the ground right in front of me!
Our other evening visitors include toads, lizards, rabbits, and bats.
Yesterday when Richard was working on the gas dock, he saw 3 bald eagles soaring over head. One of them suddenly tilted onto its side, dumping all the air out from under its wings and dove down. It leveled off just above the water surface, dropped its claws into the lake and rose with a fish. Then it sailed off to the mountain to enjoy its lunch.
